With the holiday season behind us, you may be feeling the need to step back and take a breather! I know I am. For some reason or another, this past holiday season seemed to be a bit more challenging than most. Although there were highlights that got me through, there were some really tough times throughout the season where I was ready to jump back into bed, pull the covers up over my head and wait it out until the ball dropped in Times Square signalling us all that we had made it through and a brand New Year was upon us with new opportunities and fresh starts and it was time to shed all the crazy stuff from 2013!
More than any other year that I can remember, I kept thinking to myself…Just Breathe…it will all be ok.
Just Breathe…find your spirit again…and find that relaxed, beautiful person you knew back in November! LOL!! Where is she anyway???
You wouldn’t think that breathing would be ALL that important when it comes to loving and living who you are. I mean breathing is important to staying alive of course, but what does it have to do with loving & being the REAL YOU?
Well, I’ll tell you what it means to me. When I’m “out of sorts” – “stuck” or “feeling off”, I am experiencing some of the following emotions; sadness, frustration, anger, fear and pretty much an overall feeling like crap! These emotions have an effect on my breathing, my posture, my stance and my ability to even move. I just want to sit and do nothing! Have you ever felt like that? (I secretly hope that you have, because I really don’t want to believe that I’m the only person on the planet who has ever felt this way!) I have a much better handle on this than I did just a few years ago, but at times, I get thrown right back into the soup!
When I’m in my “negative Nelly” mode…my breathing becomes shallow or without even realizing it…I tend to hold my breath. This then escalates into less oxygen being available, which trips me into getting light headed, which then makes me anxious and can lead to a panic attack!! For Pete’s sake!! All because I’m so keyed up that I don’t take the time to breathe!!
Stress & anxiety can keep us stuck and unable to relax. Finding your spirit and who you are takes time…a quieting of the mind to be able to hear your inner voice. We get caught up in the busyness, the fast pace, the expectations of us, the shoulds, the “I’m not enoughs”, the need to do more, be more, have more…until it feels like we are about to snap! Something has got to give!
Sometimes, all you need is for someone to say…”Everything is going to be ok…Just Breathe.”
When we do take that time…for just 5 or 10 minutes…whenever we feel that pressure cooker feeling building, to take a cleansing breath through the nose and exhale out the mouth….with an “Ahhh”…like a sigh…our bodies are filled with life giving oxygen and begins to relax. Our minds are quieted and a peace comes over us and we are returned to a sense of CALM.
You won’t find your spirit in the hectic lifestyle that you are living…and neither will I.
We will find it though, when we allow ourselves the privilege to Just Breathe!
