Do What You Love And Love What You Do
What does this mean, anyway? Some people are running so fast in the hamster wheel that they don’t even know what they like, much less what they love. I mean, who has the time to focus on that? And even as those words flow from my keyboard, I have to wonder with sadness…how have we gotten to this? Are we so engulfed in this habit of busyness so much that we really don’t have the time to sit still for a minute to peel back the layers of our hearts to get to the center of our longing?
Whether you are willing to admit it or not, all of us are longing for something. For me that longing was to be able to contribute to the family income, while doing something that made me want to jump out of bed in the morning, having control over my own time and schedule and being able to be available for my family by working from home. I wasn’t always able to satisfy that longing as I went from J.O.B. to J.O.B. still trying to “make it fit”. Because it was never going to fit! I didn’t like the commutes, especially in bad weather, I was always looking endlessly for some special “meaning” in my J.O.B. and what purpose I was fulfilling there (many times finding none) and I hated being away from the family, my pets and not being able to be surrounded by the comforts of my home.
Now, many of you are probably thinking…”Well, that all sounds nice, Mindy but work isn’t supposed to be comfortable! It’s just the way it is. No one likes going to work!” But I have to disagree! Work can be fun! And I was always searching and seeking out ways to be able to work from home so that I could satisfy that eternal longing that kept calling my name!
As I mentioned in my previous blog entitled Why Can’t I Just Work From Home?, I had finally started a few home based businesses in search for THE one that would be my passion. Here is a list of what I’ve done in the past that were home-based and overlapped each other in time spent.
- Secretarial Services – a home-based transcription services (for 10 years)
- Great Start Dog Obedience – Dog Training and Classes – Puppy Kindergarten and Basic Obedience for families to help them keep the dog they have chosen and not to give up when issues arose (for 5 years)
- Equipment Maintenance – A family business for inspection, repair and maintenance of utility trucks and vehicles (for 10 years)
For one reason or another, the above businesses had run their course. Presently, with where I am in my life now and honing in on my true passions and interests…my focus is on my coaching, writing, publishing and personal wellness & health:
- Joyful Simplicity, LLC – Life Coaching (7 years to the present)
- Kaleta Publishing, LLC – A small press, family-owned publishing company (4 years to present)
- Young Living Essential Oils – (almost a year)
So, you see…my interests throughout my life have been wide and varied! But I just love life and am passionate about many things! You may be that way too! Or, you may have just a few ideas that would interest you in starting a business and only want to do it part-time or to choose only one business at a time! (not everyone is as crazy as I am! LOL!!)
Whatever your situation, it IS possible to quit the day J.O.B. and become your own boss! Maybe not all at once, but as you find what you love to do, it just may become what you’ve always longed for!
Give it some thought. Wouldn’t it be nice to NOT have to fight the early morning commute? To have to get sitters for your kids after school? Not to be so dead tired when you finally escape the 8 or 10 hour day at your work? For me, it was worth it to seek out some areas of interest and give them a try!
Disclaimer!!! Now, not everyone is wired to be an entrepreneur! And if it’s not for you, then for goodness sakes, do not go for it because I said that I’m so passionate about it!! But if it IS for you, then it’s worth it for you to look into your options.
It’s not easy. It’s hard work! But, in my opinion, the benefits far outweigh everything else. And remember, you DO have the freedom to make your own schedule and you should; with your family’s needs in mind. But that’s a topic for another blog post!
I hope that I’ve given you something to think about. I certainly hope that it gets your creative juices bubbling so much that it’s all that you can think of! And…that it inspires you to take some steps toward your physical, financial, emotional and spiritual freedom!
