my happy place
Have you ever found yourself wanting to find a lovely, serene, safe space to renew, relax and refresh? As an introvert personality, I yearn for that a good deal of the time.
Do you remember when you used to tie blankets to chairs and table legs to build a tent and make a cozy little retreat for yourself and some friends? Yeah, that kind!
I’ve found a great space in our home where I shut out the world; the noise, the chatter, the craziness and the bizarre.
When I was a kid, I had this closet in my room that was just large enough for a small desk with drawers, a lamp, journal (really a “diary” with a lock. Believe me it did not keep anyone out! ugh!), pens, books (of course!) and a push button phone tethered to the wall with a cord long enough to reach inside with the door shut for privacy. I have many fond memories of time spent in my closet. (I know! I’m that girl!)
This year, 2020 has sent me again, fleeing to find safe refuge, rest and a space where my “happy” comes out.
If you’re anything like me, I’ve gotten up some days and thought, “ya know, this would be a good day to crawl back in my warm blankies, pull them over my head and wait for the world to go back when up meant up and down meant down! I long to go back to the simpler time when the world was filled with wonder and I couldn’t wait to jump out of bed and seize the day! That may take awhile, so in the meantime, I need a “happy place”! Maybe you’ve experienced this too?
It didn’t take long to find it! One of our bedrooms upstairs we reserve for the grankids and guests has a nice sized closet with a large window to be able to see what’s happening in the the neighborhood from the second floor and enjoy both the warm and cool breezes on those Spring and Fall days and bright sunshine and moonlit nights.
I have a table/desk and chair, a hot pink rug, a saucer chair for reading, a heater for cold evenings and a very big oversized stuffed rottie dog when I need a good cry and a big furry hug…oooohhh, and I almost forgot, there are twinkle lights!!! What is a “happy place” without twinkle lights???!!!
When I announce, I’m going to my “happy place”, I really mean…
- I need some quiet time, where the world will not follow me
- I need God to breathe new life into me
- I need privacy to get real, make my needs known and have a good cry with my giant stuffed rottie dog without an audience
- I need to hear comforting, encouraging, good news…that’s when I turn to God’s Word and authors who teach the truth of the Word
- I need to hear God’s words, “Come, and I will give you rest.”
It’s a awesome and weird, in my “happy place”; it’s like a time warp. Time flies by and I don’t realize how long I’ve been secluded! I know it’s time to emerge when I hear Don come to check on me, with a “Hey, you okay in there?” lol
But it’s alright. I love that time flies in my “happy place” and Don gets his alone time too, although his space & time looks much different than mine. He kicks back with playing music, listening to music or putzing around the house. But no matter how we each spend time in our “happy place” we are able to catch our breath, decompress and come out refreshed and rested.
I can tell when I don’t retreat to my “happy place” and end up charging through my day with nary a thought that I have an oasis that calls to me if I would just listen.
I get cranky, frustrated and it doesn’t take much to annoy me.
That’s when I remember…and I head up to my “happy place” for a readjustment.
Do you have a “happy place” where you can recharge?
If you don’t, I highly recommend it!
Be prepared to want to escape to your “happy place” more often; where God is waiting to interact with you in your own unique space, to put you all together, make everything alright and equip you to take on the world.
“But when you pray, go away by yourself, shut the door behind you, and pray to your Father in private.” Matt 6:6 (NLT)
It’s a safe space just for you and the Lord. No one else. There…you can tell Him everything; He listens and speaks to you through His Word. Once you show up for this relationship, you will find the love and contenment you’ve never known before. I invite you to try it! It will change.your.life!
