- It’s our home with our adopted animals
- It’s a park like atmosphere
- It’s a Big Red Reading Barn where all the fun happens
- It’s a Little Free Lending Library
- It’s sitting on straw bales & making friends
- It’s spending time in the great outdoors
- It’s about Reading, Learning & the Love of BOOKS!
And we want to share our farm with you!
I (Mindy) have always loved reading and writing. So much so that the books I loved, I would read over and over again. When I received money for chores, the first thing I wanted to buy was a beautiful tablet or stationery and a gorgeous pen that not only was pretty, but had a nice flow to it. Journaling was one way I could connect to myself and put my thoughts to paper.
Fast forward to adulthood, I wanted to write and publish my own ebooks.
Since I trained puppies and young dogs for five years, I decided to take my lesson plans and create a puppy training parent’s guide. As a result, in 2010 Surviving the Puppy Stage, How to Get Inside Your Dog’s Mind Without Losing Your Own was born.
Using Don’s editing skills, I noticed he was writing on yellow legal pads. He brought it to my attention that kids would never understand this book. I reminded him it was a parent’s guide but he thought the kids needed a book of their own and it should be from the puppy’s point of view.
I actually thought that was a brilliant idea! I asked if he was thinking an ebook, but he thought it should be a hardcopy book; “you know, something the kids can hold in their hands and read.”
Okay, that was going to be a whole new ballgame! Researcher that I am, for the next few years, I learned what it takes to publish your own book in hardcopy format and have full rights to it. Thus, Kaleta Publishing, LLC became our own self-publishing company.
Being inspired by my book, Don then, with the help of our dog Roc, wrote his kid’s book Puppy Scents, The Kids’ Guide to Puppy Care. We’ve always felt that Puppy Scents had a mission for kids & pups to bring them together in friendship to become best pals forever, so Puppy Scents will be a star feature and a source of reading & learning on the farm.
To help kids commit to their new pup, The Puppy Scents Book encourages Roc’s mission:
“I want to help kids and pups form forever friendships so that
no more dogs have to be alone, scared or homeless.” Roc
The companion Be Kind, Be Fit, Be Me Project helps kids promise:
- Be Kind – to animals, others & myself
- Be Fit – eating nutritious meals & keeping my body strong and active
- Be Me – being myself, not someone else
By pledging to the Puppy Scents Project, kids promise to do their part to make the world a better place. A wristband with the slogan helps kids to remember their promise.
Today, we continue searching for the right property that will make Ladybug Junction Farm what we envision it to be.

Mindy J Kaleta
Co-founder, Program Director
Mindy is a “farm girl” at heart and feels most at home while mothering animals, rearranging and decorating their home, re-purposing home decor pieces, offering workshops and classes, reading, writing and publishing books.
Mindy’s goal to live on a few acres, have a barn and animals, was there even as a child. At a young age, she was raising her pet rooster in her backyard in the city, making horse halters for her dogs, caring for a number of various other animals. She is busy right now mothering their three indoor cats, two large dogs and a stray kitty (whom we adopted) and is in training to be our first cat “manager” of the Big Red Reading Barn! So, the menagerie has already begun!
Co-founder, Maintenance Director
Don Kaleta is co-owner and co-founder of Ladybug Junction Farm and a Facility Director full-time in a senior living community.
Don is a regular guy who loves kids, animals and helping people. Due to his inability to be nothing other than a kid in a grownup body, Puppy Scents, The Kids’ Guide to Puppy Care was born. His out-of-the-ordinary sense of humor and his quirky way of looking at life is evident in the writing of this book with his narrator, our dog, Roc Weiler. Don is passionate about lessons learned in relationships between kids and pups. Roc’s story is filled with life lessons for every child.
Don worked for AT&T for 36 years. After an early retirement, he has served as a Facility Maintenance Director in the senior living community. He enjoys providing a safe and beautiful space for residents, staff and visitors, which will carry over nicely when we open the doors to Ladybug Junction Farm.
In addition to his talents in facilities and writing, Don also loves music, plays several instruments and is looking forward to playing for the animals to bring some joy and music to the farm.
